How to Care for a Cowhide Rug

A cowhide rug is one of the easiest natural rugs to live with. The short hair sheds dirt rather than trapping it, and the hide itself is tough. A few simple habits will keep it looking good for years.

Shake it out and vacuum with the grain

Once a week, take the rug outside and give it a firm shake to release dust and grit. In between, vacuum it using a brush head or low suction, always moving in the direction the hair lies. Avoid beater bars, which can pull at the hair.

Blot spills straight away

If something spills, blot it with a clean dry cloth; do not rub, and do not pour water on it. Most liquids sit on the surface of the hair for a moment, so fast blotting often lifts them completely.

Removing a stain

• Mix a small amount of mild soap or wool detergent with lukewarm water.
• Dampen a cloth (not soaking wet) and wipe gently in the direction of the hair.
• Wipe again with a cloth dampened in clean water, then blot dry.
• Let the area air dry flat. Never use a hair dryer or place it near a radiator.

Test any cleaner on a small hidden patch first. Do not steam clean, shampoo or machine wash a cowhide, and never soak it: water can stiffen the hide and cause it to curl.

Keep it flat and bright

Like any natural material, a cowhide can fade in strong direct sunlight, so rotate it every few months if it sits in a sunny spot. If an edge begins to curl, lay the rug flat hair-side down and place a few heavy books on the edge for a day or two. On smooth floors, a thin rug pad underneath stops it from sliding.
