How to Style a Mantel
The mantel is the natural focal point of a room, which is exactly why it can feel hard to get right. These six rules make it simple.
1. Start with an anchor
Begin with one large piece centred or slightly off-centre: a mirror, a framed painting or a large print. A gilded wall mirror is a classic choice because it bounces light around the room.
2. Vary the heights
Arrange objects so the eye moves up and down along the shelf. Tall brass candlesticks next to a low bowl and a mid-height vase create an easy rhythm.
3. Group in odd numbers
Groups of three or five feel more natural than pairs. A trio of clay vessels at one end balances a single tall piece at the other.
4. Layer front to back
Lean the anchor against the wall, then place smaller objects slightly in front of it. Overlapping pieces add depth, so the mantel looks collected rather than lined up.
5. Mix materials
Pair smooth with rough and shiny with matte: brass, stoneware, plaster and a trailing branch or dried stems. Texture matters more than colour here.
6. Leave room to breathe
Stop before the shelf is full. Empty space lets each piece be seen, and it keeps the look calm. If in doubt, take one thing away.
